The project has not yet produced a living animal, and no peer-reviewed publication has confirmed a viable reconstructed genome as of the latest public updates.

The scientific feasibility of de-extinction depends on several factors, including DNA degradation, surrogate compatibility, and habitat availability. The University of Melbourne's Thylacine Integrated Genomic Restoration Research (TIGRR) Lab, led by Professor Andrew Pask, has made progress in sequencing thylacine genomes from museum specimens. Their work, published in journals indexed by PubMed, focuses on understanding the genetic diversity lost before extinction. While the lab's research does not aim to clone a living thylacine immediately, it provides foundational data for future synthetic biology applications. The Tasmanian government has not officially endorsed any de-extinction release program, and ecological risk assessments are required before any reintroduction could be considered.

Reported thylacine sightings continue to generate media attention, particularly in Tasmania's remote western and southwestern regions.
