Art Briles Early Career and College Coaching Beginnings
Art Briles began his coaching career in Texas high school football before moving to the college ranks. His first head coaching role came at Stephenville High School, where he built a dominant program and earned statewide recognition. He later transitioned to the college level as an assistant at Texas Tech, helping develop a high-powered spread offense that would become his trademark. His early offensive innovations caught the attention of college programs nationwide.
Briles landed his first college head coaching job at Tarleton State University in 1984, where he spent two seasons building the program. He then moved to Stephen F. Austin State University, coaching from 1986 to 1992 and compiling a strong record that established him as a rising offensive mind. His success at SFA laid the foundation for his next role at a larger program.
Art Briles Head Coaching Tenure at Baylor University
Art Briles became the head coach at Baylor University in 2008, taking over a program that had struggled in the Big 12 Conference. He quickly transformed the Bears into an offensive powerhouse, leading them to a 2014 Big 12 championship and a historic 2014 Cotton Bowl victory. His Baylor teams averaged over 40 points per game multiple seasons, ranking among the highest-scoring offenses in college football history per Sports Reference data.
Despite his on-field success, Briles was terminated by Baylor in 2016 amid a major scandal involving mishandled sexual assault cases by players. The university released an independent investigation report that criticized the leadership and culture under his tenure. His departure marked the end of one of the most productive offensive eras in Baylor history, though it was overshadowed by institutional failures.
Art Briles NFL and XFL Coaching Stints
After leaving Baylor, Art Briles moved to the NFL as the offensive coordinator for the Houston Texans in 2020. He worked under head coach Bill O'Brien for one season, implementing elements of his spread system in the NFL. The Texans offense showed improvement in certain metrics, but the team did not make the playoffs that year ESPN reported on his role and departure.
Briles returned to coaching in 2023 as the head coach of the Houston Gamblers in the United States Football League, which later merged into the United Football League. His stint in the USFL/UFL allowed him to continue developing his offensive philosophy in a professional spring football setting. He remains a notable figure in football coaching circles, with his spread offense still influencing programs at every level of the sport.
