USS Gerald R. Ford features a length of about 1,106 feet, a beam of roughly 256 feet, and a draft of over 39 feet. The ship uses two A1B nuclear reactors designed by Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corporation, providing electrical generation capacity far higher than previous carrier classes and supporting future energy weapons and sensors.

Size and Displacement

The carrier has a full load displacement estimated above 100,000 long tons, making it heavier than the Nimitz-class and the largest displacement of any active aircraft carrier worldwide. Its flight deck area exceeds four acres, and the island structure is repositioned further aft to improve deck layout and airflow.

Launch and Recovery Systems

Instead of traditional steam catapults, USS Gerald R. Ford uses the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System, or EMALS, which launches aircraft with less stress on airframes and supports a wider range of weights and types. The ship also employs the Advanced Arresting Gear, or AAG, to recover aircraft more safely and reduce maintenance demands on the carrier air wing.

Operational Status, Cost, and Strategic Role

USS Gerald R. Ford was commissioned in 2017 and has since undergone extensive sea trials, carrier air wing integration, and developmental testing of EMALS and AAG systems. The Navy plans to build at least ten ships in the Ford class, with follow-on vessels expected to incorporate lessons learned and further cost reductions over time.

The carrier strike group centered on the Ford-class ship provides the U.S. Navy with a mobile, nuclear-powered airbase capable of projecting power into contested regions without relying on nearby basing rights. According to U.S. Navy and Congressional budget documents, the program supports global force presence, crisis response, and alliance deterrence, while the high unit cost reflects advanced systems, nuclear propulsion, and the industrial base required to build and maintain the largest warships in the world.
