Bob Mould Early Life and Hüsker Dü

Bob Mould was born on October 16, 1960, in Malone, New York, and grew up in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area. He is best known as the guitarist, vocalist, and principal songwriter for Hüsker Dü, the influential punk/alternative rock band formed in 1979. The group signed with SST Records and later Warner Bros., releasing landmark albums such as Zen Arcade and New Day Rising during the 1980s. Hüsker Dü disbanded in 1988 after helping shift underground punk into mainstream alternative rock.

Mould’s role in Hüsker Dü centered on distorted guitar riffs, anthemic vocals, and introspective lyrics that addressed politics, addiction, and personal struggle. The band’s 1987 double album Zen Arcade is frequently cited as a foundational alternative rock record. Hüsker Dü’s commercial peak came with the 1985 single Makes No Sense at All, which expanded their audience beyond college radio. After the breakup, Mould launched a solo career that kept him at the forefront of guitar-driven rock.

Solo Career and Sugar

Bob Mould formed the band Sugar in 1992 with bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis. Sugar released two major-label albums, File Under: Easy Listening and Beaster, both in the mid-1990s. The debut single Gatekeeper and tracks like A Good Idea reached high positions on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart. Sugar disbanded in 1996, but the project solidified Mould’s reputation for melodic, hook-driven alternative rock.

Mould’s solo discography includes albums such as Bob Mould, Modulate, and Body of Song. He has continued releasing studio albums and touring extensively into the 2020s, often with a rotating backing band. His solo work blends alternative rock, electronica, and power pop, and he has maintained a consistent presence on college and alternative radio formats. Mould also hosts a monthly radio show on SiriusXM’s Volume channel.
