The Brazilian sharpnose shark (Scoliodon laticaudus) is a small requiem shark in the family Carcharhinidae. It is recognized by a slender body, a long, pointed snout, and large eyes adapted for coastal and estuarine environments. Adults typically reach a length of about 85 cm to 90 cm, making it one of the smaller shark species in western Atlantic tropical waters.
Its coloration is grayish-brown on the dorsal side and white underneath, which provides camouflage in shallow coastal habitats. The species has a relatively low reproductive rate, with females giving birth to litters of two to nine pups after a gestation period that varies with regional conditions. These traits make population recovery slower compared to more fecund marine species.
Habitat, Distribution, and Ecological Role
The Brazilian sharpnose shark is found along the western Atlantic coast from southern Brazil to northern Argentina, including estuaries, lagoons, and shallow continental shelves. It prefers turbid, warm coastal waters and is often associated with mangrove systems and river mouths where prey density is high.
As a mid-level predator, it feeds mainly on small bony fishes, crustaceans, and cephalopods, helping regulate prey populations in nearshore ecosystems. Its presence in estuaries links it directly to the health of coastal wetlands, which are critical nurseries for many marine species and buffers against storm surges.
Conservation Status, Threats, and Management
The species is currently listed as Data Deficient by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) due to limited population assessments and ongoing fishing pressure. Small-scale and artisanal fisheries in Brazil and Argentina catch it both intentionally and as bycatch, often using gillnets and trawls in shallow waters.
Habitat degradation from coastal development, pollution, and mangrove loss compounds the risks to local populations. Monitoring programs and improved fishery reporting are needed to assess stock status accurately, and some regional initiatives align with broader frameworks promoted by international bodies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for sustainable small-scale fisheries management.
