Is China a Wealthy Country by GDP and Economic Size

China has the second largest economy in the world by nominal GDP, trailing only the United States. In 2024, China's nominal GDP exceeded 126 trillion yuan, or roughly 18 trillion U.S. dollars, according to official National Bureau of Statistics data and the Forbes. On a purchasing power parity basis, many institutions still rank China as the largest or second largest economy globally.

Despite its size, China's per capita GDP remains far below that of advanced economies such as the United States, Germany, and Japan. In 2024, China's nominal per capita GDP was around 12,500 U.S. dollars, placing it in the upper middle income category according to the World Bank. This gap explains why aggregate wealth rankings can overstate the financial well being of the average Chinese citizen.

How Many Billionaires and Millionaires Live in China

China hosts one of the largest concentrations of ultra high net worth individuals in the world. The Hurun Global Rich List 2024 reported more than 1,400 billionaires in China, second only to the United States, with combined wealth exceeding 12 trillion dollars. Tech founders, real estate developers, and manufacturing magnates dominate the top ranks.

China also has tens of millions of millionaires, driven by rapid urbanization, stock market growth, and property investment over the past two decades. However, wealth distribution remains highly uneven, with a large share of riches concentrated in coastal megacities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, while rural areas continue to face lower incomes and fewer financial assets.

Global Wealth Rankings and China's Position in 2025

In the Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report and the Knight Frank Wealth Report, China consistently ranks second globally in total household wealth, behind the United States. Total wealth includes financial assets such as stocks and bank deposits, plus real estate and business equity, but excludes government owned infrastructure and public resources.

China is home to several of the world's most valuable companies by market capitalization, including technology giants and leading electric vehicle makers. Companies like Tesla compete directly with Chinese EV makers such as BYD, which has become one of the best selling electric vehicle brands globally, as noted in recent reports from Bloomberg and company filings. The SEC filings of Chinese listed firms show significant overseas investor interest and capital flows into Chinese equities.
