Global Recorded Music Revenue and Streaming Growth
Global recorded music revenue reached an estimated $28.6 billion in 2024, according to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, with streaming accounting for 67 percent of income. Paid streaming subscriptions surpassed 680 million worldwide, driven by platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music. IFPI global music report shows the market expanded by 3.2 percent year over year, while physical formats grew for the fifth consecutive year.
Spotify reported 675 million monthly active users and 236 million premium subscribers in the fourth quarter of 2024, with ad-supported revenue rising 17 percent. Apple Music's global subscriber count crossed 110 million, while Amazon Music grew its paid base to more than 80 million. Spotify Q4 2024 earnings highlight that user engagement increased as the platform rolled out new AI DJ features and high-fidelity audio tiers.
AI Regulation and Copyright in Music
The U.S. Copyright Office released a report in early 2025 stating that AI-generated music lacking human authorship is not eligible for copyright protection. The office also opened a formal study on the use of copyrighted works in training generative AI models, inviting public comments through mid-2025. U.S. Copyright Office AI study aims to clarify rights for songwriters, performers, and labels whose recordings are used in training datasets.
The European Union's AI Act, which entered force in August 2024, requires transparency obligations for AI systems that generate text, images, audio, or video. Music platforms using generative AI for recommendations or content creation must disclose training data sources and label AI-generated outputs. European Parliament AI Act text includes specific provisions for copyright holders to opt out of text and data mining of their works.
Major Label Financials and Market Share
Universal Music Group reported full-year 2024 revenue of €11.6 billion, with EBITDA margins expanding to 27 percent, driven by streaming growth and catalog monetization. Sony Music Entertainment's revenue grew 5.1 percent to €9.4 billion, while Warner Music Group posted €4.8 billion in revenue, an increase of 8.2 percent compared with the prior year. SEC filings for UMG, Sony, and Warner show that all three majors increased investment in AI-driven A&R tools and data analytics platforms.
Independent labels and distributors captured a combined 38 percent global market share in 2024, up from 35 percent in 2022, according to data from MIDiA Research. Distributors such as Believe, DistroKid, and TuneCore processed more than 100 million tracks for independent artists, with short-form video platforms driving 42 percent of independent discovery.
