The messmate pipefish (Cheilichthys baileyi) is a small marine fish in the family Syngnathidae, known for its elongated body, fused jaws, and protective bony plates. It shares key traits with seahorses and pipefishes, including male brooding, where the male carries eggs in a specialized ventral pouch until they hatch.
Its body is typically brownish to greenish with fine mottled markings that provide camouflage among seagrass and algae. The species has a small, terminal mouth with no teeth and relies on suction feeding. It is a weak swimmer, using rapid dorsal and pectoral fin movements to navigate slowly through the water column.
