Types of RN Programs and Typical Timelines

ADN programs typically take two years at community colleges, while BSN programs take four years at universities. Accelerated BSN programs for students with a prior bachelor's degree usually take 12 to 18 months. Diploma programs, offered by some hospitals, generally take about three years. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, RNs with a BSN or higher often have better job prospects and higher starting pay than those with an ADN or diploma. Many hospitals now prioritize BSN-prepared nurses, a trend supported by initiatives such as the AACN's push for a more highly educated nursing workforce.

Bridge programs, such as LPN-to-ADN and RN-to-BSN, allow licensed practical nurses or associate-degree RNs to earn higher credentials faster. Online and hybrid formats from accredited schools now make up a growing share of these pathways. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing provides state-by-state licensure requirements, which can affect which program you choose.

Costs, Financial Aid, and ROI

Public two-year ADN programs charge an average of $6,000 to $20,000 in tuition, while private ADN programs can exceed $30,000. Four-year public BSN programs typically cost $20,000 to $40,000 in total, and private BSN programs often range from $40,000 to $80,000. Accelerated BSN programs may cost $40,000 to $70,000 or more because they compress the curriculum. Many students use federal Pell Grants, loans, and institutional scholarships to cover these costs.

Employer tuition reimbursement programs at major hospital systems and health networks can offset a large share of expenses. Some states offer loan forgiveness for RNs who work in underserved areas, a policy detail tracked by the National Conference of State Legislatures. The return on investment is strong: the median annual wage for RNs was $81,220 in May 2023, with the top 10 percent earning more than $120,000, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Licensing, Job Market, and Top Employers

All RNs must pass the NCLEX-RN exam and meet state board requirements to practice. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 6 percent employment growth for RNs from 2022 to 2032, with about 193,100 openings per year on average. Many of those openings come from replacements as experienced nurses retire.

Top employers of RNs include large hospital systems such as HCA Healthcare, Ascension Health, and CommonSpirit Health, as well as companies like UnitedHealth Group and CVS Health that operate extensive outpatient and home-health networks. The American Hospital Association reports that hospitals remain the largest single employer of RNs, but ambulatory care and home health settings are growing faster. For career planning, candidates should verify program accreditation through the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.
