The Star-48 is a family of solid-propellant rocket motors developed primarily for upper-stage and deep-space applications. It is one of the most widely used high-energy motors in satellite deployment and interplanetary missions. The motor uses a segmented, case-bonded design with hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) propellant. It has been a standard choice for spin-stabilized and three-axis-stabilized spacecraft since the 1980s. The Star-48 family includes multiple variants tailored for different payload masses and mission profiles. Its high thrust-to-weight ratio and long burn duration make it suitable for final orbital insertion and escape trajectories. The motor has flown on dozens of launch vehicles and deployed hundreds of payloads into transfer orbits and heliocentric trajectories.

The Star-48 motor is produced by Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems, formerly part of Orbital ATK and before that Thiokol. The company manufactures the motors at facilities in Utah and other U.S. locations under strict aerospace quality controls. Each motor undergoes extensive ground testing, including static fire trials, before integration onto a launch vehicle. The Star-48B variant is the most common configuration, optimized for delivering payloads to geostationary transfer orbit or planetary escape trajectories. The motor can generate approximately 16,000 to 18,000 pounds of thrust depending on the specific configuration and mission requirements. It has been used as an apogee kick motor, an upper stage, and a deep-space trajectory correction stage. The Star-48 has also been adapted for use on multiple commercial and government launch vehicles, including the Delta II, Atlas V, and Falcon 9.

Star-48 Variants and Technical Specifications

Star-48B

The Star-48B is the most produced variant in the family and serves as an apogee kick motor and upper stage. It measures roughly 1.2 meters in length and 0.6 meters in diameter, with a total impulse of around 28,000 to 30,000 Newton-seconds. The motor burns for approximately 70 to 90 seconds depending on the nozzle configuration and mission profile. It has been used on missions such as the New Horizons Pluto flyby and multiple GPS satellite deployments. The Star-48B is often integrated as a third or fourth stage on launch vehicles and can deliver payloads of several hundred kilograms to high-energy orbits. Its reliability record spans decades of operational use across government and commercial programs.

Star-48C and Other Configurations

The Star-48C variant is a smaller, lower-thrust version designed for lighter payloads and more precise orbital adjustments. It shares the same general case-bonded architecture but uses a different propellant grain geometry and nozzle design to tailor thrust and burn duration. Other configurations include specialized versions for spin-stabilized spacecraft and for use as a deorbit or disposal motor. The Star-48 family has also been adapted for use on the SpaceX Falcon 9 as an optional kick stage for small satellite deployments. The motor's design allows for customization of thrust levels, total impulse, and nozzle expansion ratios to meet specific mission requirements. These technical variations ensure the Star-48 remains relevant for both traditional geostationary missions and newer small-satellite constellations.

Applications and Mission History

The Star-48 motor has been used on more than 500 missions across government and commercial sectors. It has deployed communications satellites, Earth observation platforms, scientific probes, and national security payloads. Notable missions include the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the Juno Jupiter mission, and the Parker Solar Probe.
