Current State of the Moon and Recent Exploration Activity
The Moon remains a primary target for robotic and crewed missions as space agencies and private companies accelerate exploration plans. NASA's Artemis program aims to return humans to the lunar surface, with Artemis II scheduled to fly astronauts around the Moon and Artemis III targeting a crewed landing near the lunar south pole. The agency has contracted SpaceX to develop the Human Landing System for Artemis III, and recent milestones include completed wet dress rehearsals and ongoing hardware integration at Kennedy Space Center SpaceX.
China's Chang'e 6 mission successfully returned the first-ever samples from the far side of the Moon in mid-2024, marking a historic achievement for the China National Space Administration. The mission landed in the South Pole-Aitken basin, collected approximately 1,935 grams of material, and returned them to Earth for analysis. These samples are now being distributed to research teams worldwide to study lunar geology and the differences between the near and far sides NASA.
Scientific Findings and Lunar Data
Recent studies of Apollo-era samples and new remote sensing data have refined estimates of the Moon's internal structure and volcanic history. Researchers have confirmed that the lunar mantle is richer in iron and titanium than previously thought, and new gravity maps from the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission have revealed detailed subsurface features. These findings help explain the asymmetry between the near and far sides and inform landing site selection for future missions.
Volatile compounds, including water ice, have been detected in permanently shadowed craters at the lunar poles by instruments on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Chandrayaan-1 mission. The ice is mixed with regolith and could be extracted for life support and rocket propellant. NASA's Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER), planned for launch in late 2024, will map these resources in situ to support the Artemis base camp concept Forbes.
Future Plans and Commercial Involvement
Multiple countries and companies are developing lunar landers, rovers, and orbital infrastructure for the late 2020s. NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program has awarded contracts to Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines, and Firefly Aerospace to deliver science instruments to the Moon. Astrobotic's Peregrine lander and Intuitive Machines' Nova-C lander are part of the first wave of CLPS missions, with launches targeted for 2024 and 2025 Intuitive Machines.
The Artemis Base Camp concept envisions a sustainable human presence on the lunar surface, including the Lunar Gateway space station in lunar orbit. Gateway will serve as a staging point for surface missions and a testbed for deep-space habitation technologies. International partners, including the European Space Agency, Japan, and Canada, are contributing modules and robotics, and the program's budget and schedule are tracked by the U.S. Congress and the Government Accountability Office GAO.
