Where Is Phil Knight From

Phil Knight was born in Portland, Oregon, on February 24, 1938, and grew up in the Portland metropolitan area. He later attended the University of Oregon in Eugene, where he studied business and journalism before pursuing an MBA at Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Knight's early career included service in the U.S. Army and work as an accountant. After returning from military service, he enrolled at Stanford, where his business plan for importing high-quality Japanese running shoes laid the foundation for what would become Nike, Inc.

Early Life and Education

Phil Knight grew up in Portland, Oregon, attending Cleveland High School before enrolling at the University of Oregon. He was a distance runner on the university's track and field team, an experience that later influenced Nike's focus on athletic performance and running shoes.

After graduating from the University of Oregon, Knight earned a business degree and worked briefly as an accountant. He then pursued a Master of Business Administration at Stanford Graduate School of Business, where his term paper on importing low-cost, high-quality running shoes from Japan became the blueprint for Nike's early business model, as noted in his biography on the company's official site.

Co-Founding Nike and Headquarters Location

In 1964, Phil Knight and his former University of Oregon track coach Bill Bowerman founded Blue Ribbon Sports, the precursor to Nike, Inc. The company officially adopted the Nike name in 1978 and established its global headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, a suburb of Portland.

Today, Nike's headquarters complex in Beaverton serves as the operational center for the company's worldwide business, including design, marketing, and product development. The company remains publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker NKE and is consistently ranked among the world's largest athletic footwear and apparel brands, with its Oregon roots central to its corporate identity.
